Plus, relapse rates are often self-reported, so the data isn’t necessarily reliable. 

Despite the lack of clarity surrounding alcohol and drug addiction treatment, it’s still much more effective than attempting to stop using substances alone for most people.

Unless the drug or alcohol addiction is mild and recent, the chances of relying on willpower alone to overcome a chronic disease are slim. A mixture of formal inpatient or outpatient treatment, self-help, and support groups is statistically the most effective approach for overcoming substance abuse disorders.

Different Types of Treatment Programs

Different treatment plans are appropriate for different people, depending on the severity of the addiction, how long the person has been using, budget, loved ones, co-occurring mental illness, and various other factors. 

Detox

Detoxification is usually the first step along the road to addiction recovery, but you shouldn’t ever consider it a replacement for outpatient or inpatient treatment. During drug detox, you clear the toxins and chemicals from your system. Some people might require medication to help them through this process, which will depend on your circumstances. There aren’t usually any therapy sessions so that all your energy is focused on physical healing.

It’s important to note that cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, and group therapy are essential components of addiction treatment. Without addressing your behavioral health, the chances of relapse are significantly higher.

Inpatient

For people who are struggling with moderate to severe substance use disorders, residential drug treatment is usually the first stage in the continuum of care. You’ll attend a program and sleep at the treatment center, providing you with a clean break from your old life in view of a fresh start. In addition to a variety of types of therapy, you’ll take part in fitness programs, learn the value of mindfulness, movement, and nutrition and get access to counseling with your loved ones.

In order to make a clean break from your old habits and set new ones in stone, most inpatient programs last for at least one month. Three to six months is the ideal amount of time to spend in treatment to ensure you get the most out of it.

Outpatient

During outpatient rehab, you get access to the same treatment sessions and complementary therapies as inpatients. The major difference is that you go home in the evenings and don’t sleep in the rehab facility. This is ideal as a step down from inpatient treatment, but it can also work as a first step on the recovery journey for people with mild to moderate substance abuse disorders.    

Some people attend outpatient services on an ongoing basis to ensure they don’t get complacent. As a chronic illness, addiction is never cured — like diabetes, you can bring it into remission and gain full control over your symptoms, but the potential for relapse is ever-present.

Why Are Residential Rehab Programs So Effective?

Residential rehab is generally accepted as the most effective form of rehab, particularly durations of 12 to 34 weeks. Some reasons are:

  • Support: The level of support available at an inpatient rehab is superior to outpatient because you live with your peers and caregivers. This means you can develop trusting bonds that facilitate the openness and authenticity necessary to heal.
  • Modalities: While you get access to the same treatments in outpatient and inpatient rehab, the additional understanding of you and your circumstances plus the extra time for discussion means they’re often more effective in residential care. 
  • Ownership: Going away for rehab is a major commitment and demonstrates ownership of your addiction. When you’re not in your comfort zone, it’s much easier to face up to the reality of your situation.
  • Environment: This type of environment is free from distractions, triggers, and potentially harmful influences.

Does It Have to Be the Addicted Person’s Choice to Start Rehab?

While it’s important that someone faces up to the harsh reality of their situation to overcome substance use disorders, this won’t always occur in advance of attending treatment. Some people are hesitant about going to court-ordered rehab and don’t believe it can help them.
